Legislators and union members are rallying in Hollywood on Monday in support of suspended talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
Five Southern California Democrats — U.S. Reps. Laura Friedman, Ted Lieu, Judy Chu, Nanette Barragán and Gil Cisneros — will be joined by representatives from the Writers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America and other unions when they gather across the street from Kimmel’s studio on the Walk of Fame.
Kimmel, whose show was suspended a week ago after he commented on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has become a cause célèbre for Democrats and other opponents of President Donald Trump.
Trump’s Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr threatened regulatory action against broadcasters who carry Kimmel. Nexstar Media Group, which needs FCC approval for a planned merger with rival Tegna, then announced it wouldn’t broadcast Kimmel’s show.
Alongside Nexstar, which is the parent company of KTLA, broadcast company Sinclair also blasted Kimmel.
ABC’s parent company Disney soon suspended Kimmel’s show entirely, prompting bipartisan concern, even from Trump allies like U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
In addition to issues surrounding freedom of speech, attendees at Monday’s rally are also expected to discuss the financial impact Kimmel’s suspension has on workers in the entertainment industry and the local economy.
