SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — A man who stole a vehicle during a test drive at a car dealership was caught by a license plate reader in Scottsboro.

On Thursday, September 18, an officer who was patrolling in the area of Highway 72 Westbound near Porter Road received an alert through the Flock License Plate Reader (LPR) system stating that a stolen vehicle had passed one of the license plate readers in Scottsboro.

According to the department, the vehicle was described as a 2015 red Volkswagen Passat with a Tennessee dealer tag.

Scottsboro Police officers quickly found the vehicle just west of County Road 11 and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 72 near County Road 8 in Woodville.

Officers identified the driver as Jesse Glenn Ferrell, who initially denied that the vehicle was stolen. However, dispatch confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen from a dealership in Smithville, Tennessee.

Upon further investigation, authorities learned that Ferrell had taken the vehicle on a test drive from the dealership and failed to return it.

SPD told News 19 that Ferrell was detained and the vehicle was recovered without any damage.

Ferrell was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail. He was charged with receiving stolen property.
