German foreign minister warns of Russian ‘revanchism’

Prior to an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting in New York on Monday to discuss Russian violations of Estonian airspace, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Russia’s “revanchism” remains “unbroken.”

The aim of the meeting is to make clear that “there will be consequences if there are further violations,” Wadephul said.

“Russian revanchism is unbroken,” said the German minister. “And we must counter it with the strength of the law.”

Earlier, Wadephul called Russia’s intrusion into airspace “unacceptable,” voicing strong support for NATO’s swift response.

“Vigilance is the price of freedom,” Wadephul wrote on X on Friday after NATO jets intercepted Russian warplanes over Estonia. He said he assured Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna of Germany’s full solidarity and noted that the rapid interception showed NATO is always ready for defense.

Estonia has requested NATO consultations under Article 4 following the incident, which drew sharp criticism from EU leaders.

Sergey Aksyonov reported on Telegram that 16 others were wounded and that debris from the downed drone caused a fire near the city of Yalta. Russia’s Defense Ministry earlier called the strike a “terrorist attack” and initially reported two deaths.

UN Security Council to meet on Estonia airspace dispute

The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency session on Monday over reported Russian violations of airspace.

It comes after Tallinn requested a meeting for the first time in its 34 years of UN membership.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry said the 10 a.m. (1400 GMT/UTC) meeting responds to “Russia’s brazen violation of Estonian airspace last Friday.” Moscow has denied the charge but, as a permanent council member, can veto any resolution.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said Russia is “undermining principles that are essential to the security of all UN member states” and stressed that such actions must be addressed by the council.

Tsahkna said the violation was “part of a broader pattern of escalation by Russia, both regionally and globally,” following violations of Polish and Romanian airspace earlier this month.

Estonia said for about 12 minutes, flying roughly 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) inside the border instead of using the narrow international corridor over the Gulf of Finland. The Estonian Defense Ministry released a map of the flight path and said Italian NATO jets escorted the aircraft out.
