PHOENIX — Chandler residents who rely on public transportation are now able to use the self-driving Waymo service after the city and robotaxi company partnered up, according to a Thursday press release.

Thursday was the first day that Waymo service became available to the public via Chandler Flex, the city’s microtransit service, which transports travelers to destinations from Chandler Regional Medical Center to BASIS Chandler.

For a limited time, one-way trips via Waymo will go for just $1. Those who don’t already have a Waymo account will need to get the app to have access to the new service.

To meet your assigned Waymo vehicle, travelers can find their “virtual bus stop” on the app, which is typically not too far from your current location.

Trips normally are priced at $2 with service from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and can be booked on the Chandler Flex app or by calling 602-932-0291.

This partnership marked the first time that the robotaxis have been “incorporated directly into a U.S. public transit network.”

“Chandler has always been a hub for innovation, and we’re proud to be the first city to bring Waymo’s AVs into our public transit network,” Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said in the release.

“Chandler Flex has already provided nearly 120,000 rides to residents (since launching in June 2022), and extending our partnership with Via and Waymo ensures we continue to expand mobility options and lead with forward-looking solutions for our community.”

Each ride is $2 and an additional $1 per each additional passenger.

Those ages 13 to 18 can ride Chandler Flex transportation for free with a valid student I.D.

If you are aged 65 and older or use a wheelchair, rides are $1.

Chandler Flex’s service agreement was recently extended two years through June 30, 2027.
