A telecommunication outage disrupted more than 1,000 flights in and out of the main airports in Dallas on Friday, snarling the weekend travel plans of thousands of passengers.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it slowed flights at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, one of the nation’s busiest, and Dallas Love Field after an issue with a local telephone company’s equipment. The agency said the problem did not involve F.A.A. equipment.

At Dallas Fort Worth, 510 flights were canceled and almost 550 were delayed on Friday, according to the aviation tracker FlightAware. It showed that more than 200 flights were delayed at Dallas Love Field.

The disruptions extended into Saturday, with more than 180 flights canceled or delayed at Dallas Fort Worth, according to FlightAware.

The F.A.A. said it was working with the telephone company to determine the cause. The agency had issued ground stops for Dallas airports on Friday after the communications disruption, affecting the schedule for several hours in some cases.

American Airlines, which is headquartered at Dallas Fort Worth, said on social media that the F.A.A. had severely limited flights to the airport and to Dallas Love Field because of an issue with a telecommunications provider for the regional air traffic control facility.

The airline said it was allowing customers whose travel plans were affected to rebook without change fees.

Dallas Love Field, which is a hub for Southwest Airlines, said in a travel advisory that the ground stop could impact flight schedules and baggage delivery.

Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, said on social media that his team was monitoring the grounding of flights in Dallas and urged passengers to “remain patient as officials remedy the situation as soon as possible.”
