HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A fundraising campaign is hoping to make Huntsville roads a little safer for people riding bicycles.

Kal Fox, an eighth grader from Mountain Gap Middle, was hit and killed by a driver while riding his bike last month, and a local printing shop is honoring his memory through a campaign promoting safety for others.

Green Pea Press is printing shirts and bags with the phrase “share the roads,” a reminder that drivers should keep an eye out for bicyclists.

“It’s an effort to bring awareness to safety and get more people out riding bikes and talking about, you know, what we need to do as a community to make more people know that bikes are allowed on the road and people should be watching out for them,” said Green Pea Press Shop Manager Marcie Purves.

The campaign highlights the Huntsville Bicycle Advisory and Safety Committee (BASC), which educates about cycling safety and advocates on behalf of those who ride bikes locally.

Rachel Lackey, the owner of Green Pea Press, said she hopes people take advantage of educational materials and make an effort to learn about the laws designed to keep people on bikes safe. Lackey said there is also a fundraising component to this campaign, and because BASC does not accept donations, they had to look for other recipients.

“We did talk to Kal’s mom, and that’s why we’re donating to HAMR, which is one of the mountain biking organizations here that Kal was very involved with and his whole family,” Lackey said.

The other half of the funds will be donated to the Alabama chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which is one of the nation’s largest organizations advocating for safer roads.

The campaign runs through the end of September.
