EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — Immigrant advocacy groups say that as many as 20 “Dreamers” have been arrested by immigration agents despite their protection from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.
At least two DACA recipients have been arrested in El Paso and remain in local detention centers as Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeks to deport them. ICE has told Border Report that both individuals had been arrested on criminal charges and therefore face deportation.
Advocates for these individuals say they had been cleared of any wrongdoing.
During a news conference on Zoom this week, the groups, including FWD.us and United We Dream, said the arrests are an effort to slowly dismantle DACA, the Obama-era program that protects from deportation hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.
In this episode of Border Report Live, correspondent Salvador Rivera and host Rudy Mireles speak with Todd Schulte, president of FWD.us. He said that as the Trump administration tries to do away with DACA, there are concerns that DACA recipients will be targeted as part of the president’s immigration crackdown and be stripped of their rights and ultimately deported.
