Some traits are passed down from one generation to the next (this is not an American Eagle ad). In the case of the Kravitz bloodline, analysis of a limited sample set leads us to the conclusion that whatever gene allows a person to be on good terms with their exes is so dominant in Lenny Kravitz and Zoë Kravitz that a Punnett square is totally moot, an exercise in wasting time drawing lines, because, duh.
Let’s start with dad: Though Lenny said in a May 2024 interview that he is currently celibate, and that his policy, as a “spiritual thing,” is to be in a serious relationship before things get physical. At the time, he said that it had been nine years since his last big relationship , and cited things like 90-minute workouts at 2 a.m. (leather pants optional) among what’s keeping him very busy. Before that, however, he was married to actor Lisa Bonet from 1987 to 1993, welcoming daughter Zoë in 1988. As anyone who has been to an elementary school graduation can attest, many divorced couples maintain icy civility at best when forced to be in the same space and show up for their kid. “We vibed immediately,” he wrote of meeting Bonet in his memoir, Let Love Rule. “Time stood still. Without a lot being said, there was magnetism. I’d never had an encounter like it before. We were from the same tribe.”
And, though the marriage ended, he told the New York Times in 1993 that “I still love her very much. More than she’ll ever know.” Decades later, he not only calls himself and Bonet “best friends,” as he did in a 2013 appearance on Oprah’s Master Class, but considered Bonet’s second husband, Jason Momoa, his “brother.” (Bonet and Momoa have since divorced, announcing their split in January 2022 and finalizing it in July 2024.)
Lenny was also once engaged to Nicole Kidman, though the relationship ended without a walk down the aisle. The two were quietly betrothed in the wake of her divorce from Tom Cruise, though it was kept secret, with Kidman noting in a 2007 Vanity Fair interview that “I got engaged to somebody…but it just wasn’t right” without revealing the identity of her would-be spouse. The cat came clawing its way out of the bag in 2017, when Kidman gave an interview praising her Big Little Lies co-star, Zoë, and oh-so-casually mentioning that, yeah, she knows her dad.
“Well, I knew Zoë because I was engaged to her father,” Kidman said. “It’s all in the family! I love Lenny; he’s a great guy.”
Amiable split! Grown-up relationships and understanding that sometimes, the ring just isn’t quite the thing!
Lately, Zoë has been spotted out and about with one Harry Styles, rapidly filling in a Bingo card of international destinations where they’ve been spotted together: Linking arms in Rome. Kissing in London. Having lunch with her dad in New York. Stay on guard, Brussels. Sleep with one eye open, Tokyo.
Like father, like daughter, Zoë also seems to really mean it when the old “let’s still be friends” gambit is trotted out. She married actor Karl Glusman in June 2019. After 18 months of marriage, in December 2020, the couple filed for divorce. By 2022, she was already gushing in an interview with Elle that her ex was “an incredible human being.”
She expanded on her philosophy of romance, which sounds a lot like her dear old dad: “All my relationships in life—my friendships, my romantic relationships, my family—the journey is learning how to show up honestly,” she said. “Sometimes we can’t show up, and that’s okay as long as we know how to communicate that we love those people.”
Her most recent serious public relationship was with Channing Tatum, who starred in her directorial debut, Blink Twice, and to whom she got engaged along the way. Though they split in October 2024 after about three years, their breakup was—you guessed it!—amicable, according to sources.
After the breakup, a source told Page Six that the two “both handled the breakup very maturely” and that there was “no bad blood” between them. She continued to sing his praises in life and work, telling Elle in February 2025 that having her ex-fiancé in a leading role in her directorial debut wasn’t a problem.
“I love this thing that we made together, and I care for him very much,” she said. “Even when you bring up how great his performance is, it warms my heart to hear that, and I’m so happy that all of it happened. I just feel so grateful that we got to go on that journey together.”
Even her earlier relationships still get the amicable split label: A source insisted that she and Penn Badgley, whom she dated from 2011 to June 2013 and were in what Badgley described as “real, true, earth-shattering love,” ended on “good terms.” “It wasn’t a sad breakup,” the source said. That rumored Drake romance in 2013, complete with kissing photos at a Beyoncé concert? In 2017, Zoë slyly confirmed on Watch What Happens Live that they “hung out for a minute,” adding that “we are very good friends.” Singer-songwriter Twin Shadow, who was romantically linked to Zoë from 2015 to 2016, wished her a happy birthday on social media in 2024, calling her “the sweetest kid.”
In 2014, she was briefly rumored to be dating Chris Pine. There’s no bad blood there, as evidenced by the fact that he attended the 2019 pre-wedding rehearsal dinner held for her and Glusman in Paris with his girlfriend.
In an uncertain economy, side hustles are the norm now. In the unlikely event their acting and musical careers see a downturn, perhaps Lenny and Zoë could cash in by teaching a subscription masterclass in the art of the amicable breakup.
Representatives for the Kravitzes did not respond to Vanity Fair’s request for comment.
