EXCLUSIVE: Léa Seydoux is set to star in Marie Kreutzer’s upcoming drama Gentle Monster alongside Jella Haase, Laurence Rupp and Catherine Deneuve, with the cast unveiled as the production gears up for principal photography.
The production marks Kreutzer’s first feature since her critically acclaimed 2022 historical drama Corsage, starring Vicky Krieps as the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi.
Seydoux will lead the cast in the role of a renowned pianist who, after relocating with her family to the countryside, uncovers a life-shattering truth that forces her to confront the complexities of love, trust, and deception.
Produced by Alexander Gehr and Johanna Scherz at Vienna-based Film AG, the film marks the first collaboration between Kreutzer and Seydoux.
The French actress was in Venice in September with Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi’s ensemble drama Silent Friend, which world premiered in competition winning a slew of collateral prizes.
Other recent credits include Dune: Part Two and Second Act, while she will next be seen in David and Nathan Zellner’s sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang, alongside Cate Blanchett, David Bautista, Steven Yeun, Zoë Kravitz, Riley Keough and Channing Tatum.
German actress Haase is coming off an award-winning performance in hit comedy Chantal in Fairyland, while Austrian actor Rupp’s recent feature credits include Veni Vidi Vici. French star Deneuve was seen recently in Spirit World and Marcello Mio.
Gentle Monster was one of ten projects selected for the Investors Circle at this year’s Cannes Film Market where it was awarded the initiative’s main ArteKino International Prize.
Paris-based sales agent, producer, and financier mk2 Films is handling international sales with the film joining titles such as It Was Just an Accident, Sound of Falling, The Secret Agent Filho on its current slate
The company is also backing the film as its first investment under a multi-year slate financing deal with international fund manager IPR.VC.
Glehr and Scherz are longtime collaborators with Kreutzer having produced her Academy Award-shortlisted Cannes Un Certain Regard film Corsage as well as her 2019 Berlinale Golden Bear contender The Ground Beneath My Feet.
