‘I don’t know what happened’: AI glasses fail during Zuckerberg’s Meta Connect keynote

(KRON) — The AI-powered smart glasses that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is calling “the next generation of Meta Ray-Ban glasses,” were the focus of multiple failed demonstrations during Zuckerberg’s keynote speech at the company’s annual conference Wednesday.

The Meta Connect 2025 presentation began with a point-of-view demonstration showing Zuckerberg put on the glasses, fire up his entrance music and walk from his trailer to the keynote stage.

The new Meta Ray-Ban Display, priced at $799, hit the market on Sept. 30. The glasses have double the battery life, 3K video capabilities and double the resolution of the previous model, according to the company.

“Meta AI is going to transition from being something that you invoke when you have a question, to a service that is running all the time and helping you out throughout the day,” Zuckerberg said.

The smart glasses demo never made it past the question phase.

The trouble began when Zuckerberg tossed to a live video demonstration from internet chef and official “grillmaster” of the Buffalo Bills Jack Mancuso. During the demo, Mancuso asked the glasses to help him make a Korean-inspired steak sauce for his sandwich.

“Hey, Meta, start live AI,” Mancuso said.

“I love the setup you have here with soy sauce and other ingredients,” the AI system responded, seemingly assessing the ingredients in front of the chef. “How can I help?”

Seeking instruction on how to make the sauce, Mancuso prompted the AI: “What do I do first?”

In front of a table full of untouched ingredients, the smart glasses incorrectly assumed the chef had already started the cooking process.

“You already combined the base ingredients, so now grate a pair to add to the sauce,” the AI responded.

Mancuso repeated his question: “What do I do first?”

The AI gave a similar response: “You already combined the base ingredients, so now grate a pair and gently combine it with the base sauce.”

With no way to move forward, the chef blamed the issue of the Wi-Fi.

“I think the Wi-Fi might be messed up,” Mancuso said. “Sorry. Back to you Mark.”

Zuckerberg addressed the failed demonstration and moved on.

“It’s all good,” Zuckerberg said. “The irony of the whole thing is that you spend years making technology and then the Wi-Fi at the day kind of catches you.”

Later in the demonstration, Zuckerberg used his glasses and paired wristband to text Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth. However, he repeatedly failed to start a live video call with the business executive.

“That’s too bad. I don’t know what happened,” Zuckerberg said.

Bosworth eventually joined Zuckerberg on stage, and the two demonstrated a face-to-face conversation between two Meta Ray-Ban wearers. During the conversation, the smart glasses provided subtitles of the discussion — a service that could potentially aid people with impaired hearing.

“If you have an issue hearing, I think that this is going to be a game changer,” Zuckerberg said.
