How people define pretty — at least in terms of clothing — is a question at the heart of any fashion week. During the latest New York Fashion Week, which ended on Tuesday, designers and people in the crowds put forth various definitions that suggested a move away from girlishness toward something more elegant.

Black skirts were a staple on the streets, whether mini, knee-length or longer. As were polka dots, a micro trend at Copenhagen Fashion Week this summer that apparently has more staying power than others. Gone from most runways were the big hair bows and long ribbons that in past seasons had been used to evoke adolescence. In their place was attire that felt, if not totally mature, a little more grown up.

Corsets, beloved by bygone and modern-day fashionistas alike, appeared in the collections of Meruert Tolegen and Gabe Gordon. The label Zankov offered snazzy stripes and jazzy sequins — the type of festive attire that is sure to play well at fancy parties. Diotima showed intricate tulle gowns that would stun at any gala, and Coach’s collection of cropped jackets and tops paired with big trousers and skirts seemed tailored to those influencers and off-duty models who like their fashion at the intersection of cute and hot.
