COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — There were a lot of big wins in week three of high school football, but the Colbert County Indians arguably had the best win of the week.
The Indians took down the Lauderdale County Tigers for the first time since 2018 and the first time on the road since the 2015 playoffs.
Coach Oscar Bonds says his team started the game off fast, and it helped them capture the momentum.
“I thought we started the game off right with a big special teams return we ran the kick off all the way back to the two or three yard line and we scored and then the defense was great all night causing a few turnovers and we just played more physical than they did in my opinion which we knew that they was a very phyiscal team so we had to match their phyiscality,” coach Bonds said.
In the game, senior Frank Hayes had two rushing touchdowns and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Hayes says the team knew they had to play a complete game to take down the Tigers.
“It felt good to win, knowing that we hadn’t won in eight years, I mean, I knew we had to come out and play ball, they are a good team and all, but I mean, I knew we had the better team, we just had to stick together and play for four quarters like coach Bonds told us,” Hayes said.
In his senior year, Hayes says hosting a playoff game would be something he really would like to see this team achieve.
“That’s something I’d really like to do. I ain’t ever really made it really far in the playoffs, but second round my freshman year, but I’m ready to see where the season takes us from here,” Hayes said.
The Indians will get back to work on Friday night when they host Rogers.
