The Anaheim judge who killed his wife in 2023 was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison on Wednesday.
Jeffrey Ferguson was convicted in April of killing his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, with a handgun during what prosecutors called “a drunken argument over money.”
Prosecutors said Ferguson admitted to the killing immediately after it happened in a text message to his court clerk and bailiff.
“I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry,” Ferguson wrote while his son attempted CPR on his wife.
The 35-year sentence reported by the Orange County Register and others is effectively a life sentence for the 74-year-old Ferguson.
“This was not an accident; it was murder,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement. “Lady Justice is blindfolded, impervious of any attempts to sway her judgement in favor of someone who once held the position of immense trust as a judge and held the fate of the accused in his own hands. While we mourn the tragic loss of Sheryl at the hands of her own husband, we also grieve the tarnish this crime has brought to the judiciary and to the legal profession as a whole by someone who went from wielding the sword of justice to committing the ultimate act of evil.”
