NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – Three law enforcement officers are dead and two others are injured after a shooting in York County on Wednesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris.

Col. Paris says the two officers who were injured are in critical but stable condition after a “critical incident that has rocked the community here in York County.” The suspected shooter is also deceased, and police believe the community is safe.

In a press conference Wednesday evening, Paris said state police was not yet releasing the officers’ identities or the agencies they worked for.

“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said. “This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society.”

Ted Czech with the York County Office of Emergency Management said a 911 call came in at 2:10 p.m. ET for an incident in the areas of Haar Road and Senft Road in North Codorus Township, near the Pennsylvania-Maryland state line. The officers were following up on an investigation that began on Tuesday, Paris said, but wouldn’t provide more specifics.

A source told WHTM that authorities were working to serve a warrant, but no additional details were available. A neighbor told the news station that they heard gunshots while officers were in the area near a barn.

“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” Governor Josh Shapiro said during a press conference at WellSpan York Hospital. “Grieve for the loss of life for three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, and served this country, and we continue to pray for the full recovery of those who are dealing with their wounds.”

“It’s an extraordinary thing that these law enforcement families do,” the governor added. “They support the individual who puts on the uniform and runs toward danger,” Shapiro said. “They’re there for them when they leave in the morning and they pray throughout the day that they will come home at night.”

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, who previously served as York County District Attorney, said Wednesday, “The death of any public servant is an absolute tragedy. Learning that three officers were killed in York County where I worked for many years as a prosecutor, and where I still call home, is unfathomable.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi says the FBI and ATF are on scene assisting local law enforcement, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says they are monitoring the “tragic attack” and working with partners in the region.

FBI Director Kash Patel said Wednesday, “Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community.”

The Spring Grove Area School District issued a shelter-in-place order, though it said schools and students were not involved in the shooting. The district said in a statement that authorities “advised us to hold students and staff in our buildings as a precaution while several area roads are closed.” The order has since been lifted.

The incident unfolded on a rural road that winds through an agricultural area with a red barn and farm fields. The region of south-central Pennsylvania is an apple-growing area that attracts migrant farm workers, many of them from Mexico.

The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia said in a social media post that they were “monitoring the incident” in Pennsylvania and advised Mexican residents nearby to follow official instructions. A spokesperson for the Mexican consulate in Philadelphia said the post was “only a precautionary alert for our community.
