(NewsNation) — A well-known music producer was found dead in New York City on Tuesday, officials said.
Sidney “Omen” Brown, 49, was discovered by family members in his East Harlem apartment. They had gone to check on him after he missed an appearance as a DJ at Barawine, a bar and restaurant in Harlem.
“He was holistic and healthy,” said his sister, Nicole Iris Brown. “So we don’t know of him being sick, so this is all pretty sudden.”
Sidney “Omen” Brown became a household name working with such stars as Jay Z, Ludacris, Drake and Beyoncé. He was credited as a producer on Ludacris’ hit single “Tell It Like It Is.” Brown also produced the track “Shut It Down,” which was featured on Drake’s debut album, “Thank Me Later.”
“I hope people will remember that he was willing to help the younger generation,” Nicole Iris Brown said. “He was always big on helping younger people start their careers and get themselves into the game.”
In a social media post, Barawine Harlem expressed “deep sadness” over Brown’s death.
“It is with shock and deep sadness we have heard about the passing of our dear friend Omen Sidney Brown,” Barawine Harlem wrote. “Omen was part of Barawine’s team for over a decade bringing his unique talent to all. There are not enough words to express our feelings.. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, his friends and all who love him. We will never forget you Omen. Rest in peace.”
The cause and manner of death are pending further study, according to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
