PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is inviting Arizonans to put their creativity skills to the test by participating in its annual Safety Message Contest.

ADOT opened submissions kicking off the competition on Tuesday and will accept online entries through Monday, Sept. 22.

“Safety is ADOT’s top priority and it’s our mission to safely connect Arizonans to where they want to go,” ADOT Director Jennifer Toth said in an announcement. “The Safety Message Contest is an engaging way to help remind all of us to make better decisions behind the wheel and I look forward to seeing what creative messages the public comes up with.”

Details on ADOT’s Safety Message Contest

There is no limit to the amount of sign ideas that participants can submit.

  • 2 winners announced in ADOT's annual Safety Message Contest
  • ADOT reveals 2 winners for its annual Safety Message Contest

After the contest closes, ADOT will select 10 finalists from the entries for the public to vote on. The two safety messages that receive the most votes will light up overhead boards on Arizona’s highways.

The guideline that Arizonans must follow include:

  • The message has to be related to traffic safety.
  • The message has to fit on the overhead message board which can accommodate three lines and 18 characters per line.
  • Submissions are not allowed to include hashtags, phone numbers, emojis or web addresses.
  • Signs can use ampersands (&) to save space.

In 2024, the contest received more than 2,500 submissions. The winning messages were “Drive with care, life has no spare” and “Watch your speed, not your social feed.”
