HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A shooting on Binford Drive on Tuesday morning left one man dead and another hospitalized, making it the area’s fourth shooting in four months.

The Huntsville Police Department said it responded to a call about a potential shooting around 10 a.m. Tuesday at the 200 block of Binford Drive, which is near the L.R. Patton Apartment Complex.

District 4 Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling said Huntsville is not a violent city and that he will work with city agencies to combat the violence.

“When something like this happens, this is very serious, very big news,” Kling said. “We’re not like Birmingham, you know, where stuff like this happens just about every couple of days.”

The Huntsville Housing Authority oversees the L.R. Patton Apartment Complex. HHA started enforcing a curfew at its properties in June to reduce crime, along with HPD increasing patrols in the area. Although this deadly shooting happened in broad daylight.

Kling is hopeful that a new development in the area, complete with shopping and different housing opportunities, will help reduce violence.

“A project that is getting ready to break ground, called Mill Creek,” Kling said. “A major Flagg grocery store is coming to that area. All this is going to help invest in that area, and I think that’ll help to turn this neighborhood around in the future.”

Huntsville Police did not mention a potential suspect or disclose either name of the two men involved in the shooting. The department did say the Major Crimes Unit is investigating.

News 19’s Peyton Newman reached out to the Huntsville Housing Authority several times on Tuesday for a comment and received no response.
