MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A West Morgan football player injured during a game on Friday night is anticipated to make a full recovery, Morgan County Schools told News 19.

According to several posts on the West Morgan Football team’s social media, senior linebacker Cole Thorn had a brain bleed and was transported to the hospital, where he underwent surgery on Friday night. A post said the surgeon was able to stop the bleeding.

The following morning, the team’s page said Thorn was awake and talking, and as of Monday morning, he was walking on his own.

“They feel great about his progress so far!!” the team said. “Let’s keep praying for this positive news!!”

Morgan County Superintendent Traci Turrentine said physicians anticipate he will make a full recovery. She also said the school district is thankful for the support from the community, but asked that everyone continue to keep the Thorn family in their prayers.

Morgan County Schools provided the following statement from Turrentine to News 19:

Morgan County Schools places the utmost importance on the safety and well-being of every student-athlete. On Friday evening, during a football game, a West Morgan High School football player sustained an injury that required immediate medical attention. Medical staff on location, along with administrators and MCS employees, responded promptly and were well-equipped to provide the necessary care.

The student-athlete underwent emergency surgery on Friday night. By Saturday morning, he was awake, and as of today, he is up and walking. Physicians anticipate a full recovery.

Morgan County Schools commends the swift actions of medical personnel, administrators, and staff whose preparedness ensured the best possible outcome. The district also expresses deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community and asks that everyone continue to keep this student-athlete and his family in their thoughts and prayers during his recovery.
