Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns released a statement condemning “harmful rhetoric” in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Saying Kirk’s killing “serves as a stark reminder of the devastating outcomes that can result from vitriol and violent rhetoric,” Burns cited several examples of inflammatory words being used in city proceedings.
“Recent instances illustrate the harmful rhetoric, such as elected officials making false accusations of council members being neo-Nazi and statements by others apparently urging supporters to blow up places where people work,” Burns said. “Such reckless and inflammatory statements carry serious consequences for those targeted and have no place in civil discourse.”
Burns also promised that the city will “do everything we can to eliminate acts of violence or inflammatory rhetoric that threaten the safety or well-being of our community.”
“The City unequivocally condemns all forms of violence and violent rhetoric, as well as the spread of false and inflammatory statements that undermine the safety of our community … We call on all residents, leaders, and visitors to join us in promoting a culture of respect, civility, and unity in Huntington Beach.”
