Residents and tourists alike are urged to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters at five L.A. County beaches, health officials announced Monday.

The warnings were issued because bacterial levels exceeded health standards during the last test.

Here are the impacted beaches:

  • Avalon Beach at Catalina Island: 100 feet west of the pier and the swim area west of Green Pleasure Pier.
  • Mothers Beach in Marina del Rey: Entire swim area.
  •  Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica: 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier.
  • Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu: 100 yards up and down the coast from the public restrooms.
  • Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica Beach, near South Tower 20: 100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain.

Still, it’s not all bad news. An ocean water warning was lifted for Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro since water quality levels were within state standards.

Santa Monica officials, in collaboration with The Bay Foundation and UCLA, are taking steps to learn more about how Santa Monica’s beach water affects water quality and the surrounding environment.

The beach often has an ocean water warning and is ranked low on Heal the Bay’s Beach Bummer List.

Information on beach conditions is available 24/7, 365 days a year by visiting the health department website.
