Between streaming and cable, viewers have a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, Sept. 15-21. Details and times are subject to change.
Dancing, games and real housewives — oh my!
For some TV viewers, fall means an influx of football. For me, it means that every Tuesday night I watch a slew of celebrities and professional dancers try their hands (and feet) at the jive, tango or pasodoble. Yes, “Dancing With the Stars” is back for its 34th season, and Alix Earle, Robert Irwin and Hilaria Baldwin are a few of the contestants vying for the mirrorball trophy. Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro are back to host the live show. Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC and streaming on Disney+.
It’s a big week for reality stars from Utah — Taylor Frankie Paul of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” was just named the new Bachelorette, and “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” is back on small screens after things left off on a messy note during the reunion (what reunion does go smoothly?). There will also be a Bravo crossover this season as the ladies head to Greece in a yacht chartered by the “Below Deck” crew. It’s Andy Cohen’s universe, and we’re just living in it. Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Bravo.
Oh, you thought that after a 37-episode run, “Love Island” would be leaving us in a lurch? No chance. “Love Island Games,” which brings former contestants to Fiji to compete in challenges and get a second chance at love, is back after a yearlong hiatus. Ariana Madix is returning as the host, and one contestant, Solène Favreau, might look familiar to Bravo fans. After appearing on “Love Island France,” she most recently was a stew on “Below Deck.” As is tradition with this franchise, a new episode will drop every single day except for Wednesdays, bringing drama in almost real time and giving viewers a chance to vote on the show’s outcomes. Streaming Thursday at 9 p.m. on Peacock.
Crime: real and imagined.
Jude Law and Jason Bateman playing brothers? Sure, why not? The limited series “Black Rabbit” follows Jake Friedkin (Law), who is a charming restaurateur, and his brother, Vince (Bateman), who is far less put together. When Vince returns to the restaurant business, he brings trouble with him, and the two are sucked into New York’s sketchy nightlife. Bateman also directs the first two episodes. Streaming Thursday on Netflix.
Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), the janitor-turned-sleuth, is back for a second season of “High Potential.” When the show premiered last fall, it became the ABC’s highest rated drama among adults 18 to 49 in nearly four years. The second season will continue with the detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department debating how much they can use Morgan’s help, which they desperately need. Tuesday at 10 p.m. on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.
The murder of Hae Min Lee and the arrest of Adnan Syed might be one of the most-talked-about true-crime cases, thanks mostly to the 2014 podcast “Serial” and the subsequent 2019 documentary series “The Case Against Adnan Syed.” But if you need a refresher: Lee was killed in 1999, and her ex-boyfriend, Syed, was later arrested and convicted of her murder.
In 2022, after many legal proceedings, Syed was released from prison after a judge vacated his conviction, but it was later reinstated after an appeal, though Syed remained out of prison. This year, a judge reduced his sentence to “time served” and agreed to supervised probation for five years. Amy J. Berg, the writer and director of the documentary series, now is releasing its fifth part, which chronicles the investigation of an early suspect in Lee’s murder and the re-examination of the case by Syed’s legal team. Thursday at 9 p.m. on HBO.
That’s showbiz, baby!
Hosting a morning broadcast is not all fun and games, or at least that’s what “The Morning Show” is trying to tell us. The series, starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, follows the anchors, producers and media higher-ups as it delves into all the drama that goes on behind the scenes. Season 3, which aired in 2023, left things on a cliffhanger when Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) turned herself into the F.B.I. for taking part in cover-up for a Jan. 6 attack involving her brother. The fourth season jumps ahead to today, and from the look of the trailer, Bradley isn’t in jail. Streaming Wednesday on AppleTV+.
