On Sunday night, Owen Cooper, 15, who made his debut acting in the Netflix crime drama Adolescence, became the youngest male actor to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.
In his acceptance speech, Cooper revealed only started drama classes a couple of years ago and encouraged those watching to step out of their comfort zones.
The milestone comes four decades after Roxana Zal, 14, became the youngest female winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Special in 1984 for Something About Amelia, according to the website for the awards.
Adolescence, a series about a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller (Cooper), who is arrested because he’s accused of stabbing a female classmate, racked up 13 Emmy nominations this year.
Off-screen, the show sparked a worldwide conversation about the state of boys’ mental health and incel culture, as Miller lashes out after being cyber-bullied and called an incel, which stands for “involuntary celibate.”
U.K. Prime Minister Keith Starmer watched the Adolescence with his family and participated in a roundtable with charities and the show’s creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham to discuss next steps, policy-wise. Netflix also made the show free to watch in U.K. classrooms.
