Authorities are investigating a brutal hit-and-run after one of two drivers who fatally struck a pedestrian in South Los Angeles fled the scene on Friday night.

The first collision happened around 7:36 p.m., near Figueroa and 81st streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Investigators said the pedestrian was crossing Figueroa Street outside a marked crosswalk when a silver Toyota Corolla, heading south, struck him. Police specified that the impact caused the victim to go airborne before landing in the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota pulled over and tried to help, but before aid could be rendered, another southbound vehicle — described only as a blue car — hit the victim a second time. Police said the driver of the blue vehicle sped away without stopping.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.

LAPD detectives with the South Traffic Division are asking for the public’s help to identify the driver of the blue vehicle. The city of Los Angeles offers a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in fatal hit-and-run cases.

Anyone with information is urged to call South Traffic Division Detective III Moreno at 213-458-3472 during business hours, or the division’s Watch Commander at 323-421-2570 after hours. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.lacrimestoppers.org.
