Greta Thunberg strutted through a Tunisian port in turquoise Crocs and a fanny pack Saturday to board the latest Gaza-bound flotilla — one that Israel has mocked as a “selfie yacht.”
The 22-year-old Swedish climate activist turned celebrity arrived in Bizerte, Tunisia, to jump on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which claims it will deliver humanitarian supplies to the Palestinian enclave and “break Israel’s blockade.”
Flotilla organizers said the convoy includes more than 40 vessels and as many as 700 activists from 40 countries, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.
Thunberg said aboard the flotilla that she was “absolutely disgusted and appalled to live in a world where our people in power, everyday, are betraying Palestinians.”
She also accused Israel of trying to seize Gaza and brushed off the risks of her voyage, saying they pale in comparison to what Palestinians face daily.
The flotilla’s vessels were recently hit by suspected drone strikes off Tunisia’s coast, organizers claimed. Tunisian officials denied it, however, saying there was “no basis in truth” and the ship’s fires likely started onboard.
Israel has long railed against the flotillas referring to them as empty spectacles that do little for ordinary Palestinians.
In June, its navy intercepted one carrying Thunberg, hauled it to port and deported her, later mocking the trip as a “selfie yacht” cruise.
“There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve Instagram selfies,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said at the time.
The flotilla has already stumbled. Just two weeks ago, it set off from Barcelona only to be forced back to port within hours when storms whipped up 35 mph winds.
But organizers insist they will press forward, calling it the “largest humanitarian maritime convoy ever undertaken,” while vowing to defy Israel’s blockade.
Israel maintains the blockade is essential to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons — a restriction it tightened after Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre that left 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 taken hostage.
