EXCLUSIVE: When the Eaton Fire tore through the Altadena neighborhood of Los Angeles on January 7 it reduced thousands of houses and buildings to ashes, including the homes of award-winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner and her brother, producer David Timoner.

Ondi was in Europe with her wife, the composer Morgan Doctor, working on a film when the fire erupted. After reuniting with her brother and her mom Lisa – who was rescued from the wildfire by David Timoner – Ondi quickly regrouped and began to document the decimated community around her.

Her new film All the Walls Came Down opens tonight at the Laemmle Glendale, only about 10 miles to southwest of Altadena. We understand shows are sold out through Monday for the short documentary, which premiered just days ago at the Telluride Film Festival. Timoner and cast will take part in Q&As following showings on Friday through Monday.

We have your first look at the documentary in the trailer above.

“Returning to the ruins left by the Eaton Fire, Ondi finds her neighbors, many of whom had their generational wealth wiped out overnight, now at risk of being displaced from the only place they’ve ever called home,” notes a synopsis. “But the community, led by community organizer Heavenly Hughes and My TRIBE Rise, is bonded by fire in solidarity, determined to protect one another. All the Walls Came Down shares a personal story of a community ravaged by climate catastrophe and Altadena’s remarkable resilience that rallies in its wake.”

On Sept. 1, Timoner posted on Facebook, “The film is at once an intensely personal story of profound loss and also the story of our resilient community, which has never been more united, as we stand together in an effort to preserve the properties of our neighbors and the unique cultural fabric of our town.”

In an interview with Deadline in June, Timoner observed, “It was definitely eerie to go back there [Altadena] to make this film, but it was also very heartening actually. It was heartening to realize that we could come together as artists and make something, even with all of the horrible destruction in our world right now, all of the senseless loss from the fires. But also, clearly, we’re not the first climate refugees you are going to know personally because this is just the beginning of the unraveling of our planet.”

In the trailer, Timoner, Doctor and their neighbors survey the ruins of their homes and confront the question of what happens next. Watch the trailer above.
