Alabama State University suspends all campus activities following ‘terroristic threat’

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama State University released a statement to social media Thursday regarding a law enforcement presence on campus.

Around 11:28 a.m., ASU announced on social media that all activities for the remainder of Thursday were suspended. AL.com reported that the University said it received a “terroristic threat.” You can read the full announcement below.

“On behalf of Alabama State University, please be advised that the campus is closed for the remainder of the day, Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Campus Police, along with other law enforcement agencies, are actively clearing all buildings on campus. Once your building has been cleared, you will be permitted to leave only through the front entrance of your building. This is for your safety.

Students, faculty, and staff who do not reside on campus are asked to leave immediately once their building has been cleared.

Students who reside on campus are directed to continue to shelter in place inside their residence halls until further notice.

Please be aware that all campus ofices must be cleared and official University business is suspended for the remainder of the day.

Ina ddition, all campus activities are canceled for today, September 11, 2025. This includes day and evening classes, graduate classes, rehearsals, and all other scheduled events.

The John G. Hardy Student Center is closed until further notice.

We appreciate your cooperation as we work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our Hornet family. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Anyone with information or concerns should contact Campus Police at 334-229-4200.

Alabama State University

The nature of the threat was not addressed in the statement.

Around 12:51 p.m., the University said law enforcement and University officials gave the campus the all-clear and said the immediate threat had been resolved. The campus is still closed to the public and students are asked to continue to shelter in place until further notice.

ASU is one of several HBCU campuses around the country that received a type of threat on Thursday.

Hampton University in Virginia said it was notified of a “potential threat,” and all campus activities for Thursday and Friday have been canceled.

Virginia State University also reported that the university is on lockdown following a threat. No injuries or incidents were reported, and the campus remains on lockdown until further notice, according to the University.

Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also reported a potential threat to campus safety and that the campus was on lockdown. The campus said the lockdown applies to the entire Baton Rouge landmass, which also includes Southern University Law Center, Southern University Agriculture Research and Extension Center, and Southern University Laboratory.

Around 12:36 p.m., the University announced that the lockdown had been lifted, but all campus activities were canceled for the remainder of Thursday and for Friday.

Bethune-Cookman University in Florida also announced that the campus was on lockdown due to a potential threat. The University also said all classes have been canceled for the day and students should return to their dorms to shelter in place.

Spelman University in Atlanta announced that while it had not received a threat, it has closed its proximity out of precaution and additional security will be present around campus. The University said Clark Atlanta University was also targeted for a potential threat, but CAU has not released a statement about the incident.
