DENVER (KDVR) — The suspect in a shooting at Colorado’s Evergreen High School on Wednesday died of self-inflicted injuries at the hospital, according to officials, leaving two other students injured.

Class was canceled both Thursday and Friday in light of the shooting.

Jefferson County authorities reported that at about 12:24 p.m., there were reports of an “active assailant” near the school. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press conference that three students were shot at the school and taken to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

As of Thursday morning, one student remained at the hospital in critical condition while a second student with non-life-threatening injuries was no longer under hospital care, according to Saint Anthony Hospital Trauma Medical Director Brian Blackwood. The suspected shooter, a male student of Evergreen High School, died at the hospital from his injuries on Wednesday evening, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said they do not believe law enforcement fired any rounds and that officers were re-entering the school Wednesday afternoon to learn whether the shots were fired inside the building or outside, and what kind of weapon was used.

Officials in Jefferson County first posted an alert shortly after 12:40 p.m. local time, notifying the public of an active assailant at the school. Parents were urged not to pick up their children from the school as it was still an “active scene.”

The county also sent out an “urgent lookout alert” to people in the area, saying there was an active shooter reported at the school.

“I am closely monitoring the situation at Evergreen High School, and am getting live updates,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wrote on X shortly after the alerts. “State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”

On Wednesday, officials set up a reunification point at the nearby Bergen Meadow Elementary School. The same facility was to have a resource and information center on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
