Selena Gomez says her secret to being successful at work lies in punctuality.

During an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of “Good Hang with Amy Poehler,” Gomez shared a piece of advice from her grandpa that shaped her work ethic.

“My papa used to say, ‘If you are on time, you’re already late.’ So that means I get to places 30 minutes before, or my team has had to trick me because I show up so early, but I like to be prepared, and to say hi and not be rushed,” Gomez told podcast host Amy Poehler.

“The feeling of being rushed is very stressful,” she added.

Watching her “Only Murders in the Building” costars Martin Short and Steve Martin show up on set with their professionalism also inspires her to bring her best.

“They’ve been working for so long, and if I’m tired and they’re not, sometimes, I’m like ‘Whoa, OK. I can do this,'” Gomez said.

She says she’s been “very lucky” to work with people who value punctuality.

“I think it’s disrespectful,” Gomez said. “I would feel like a puppy dog with my tail in between my legs the whole day at work if I made the crew wait even 30 minutes. I’d be like so sorry.”

In January, she told W Magazine that her pet peeve is “people who are late.”

Her commitment to punctuality seems to have paid off. Beyond a thriving career in showbiz, Gomez has also built a wildly successful beauty brand.

In September 2024, Bloomberg reported that her net worth had crossed $1 billion, with the bulk of her wealth coming from Rare Beauty.

Etiquette coach Mariah Grumet told Business Insider in October that showing up late to meetings is a major faux pas when dealing with colleagues.

“Being punctual is a representation of your professional image,” Grumet said, adding that punctuality shows that you care about your work.

A representative for Gomez did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.
