MADISON COUNTY, Ala (WHNT) — Madison Mayor Paul Finley gave his final city update on Wednesday.

He said the city of Madison has a lot in the works, including 25 different projects totaling more than $74 million.

“I think what you find out as mayor is your job is to take the money you’re given and stretch it as far as you can to make a difference for your community,” Finley said.

Finley said these projects range from roundabouts, sidewalks and turning lanes to upgrades to Toyota Field.

He said they are also putting a special emphasis on public safety.

“We’re building our fourth fire station, a second police substation that gives us the ability to stretch out, we are also are taking care of our employees when it comes to the community center, the Madison wellness center, and pay,” he said.

With the recent announcement of Space Command coming to the Rocket City, Finley said they are ready to welcome the influx of people.

“I think the city of Madison has grown a family of four a day for the last 45 years and nobody’s moved,” he said. “So, I think we’ll be ready for whomever decides they want Madison to be their home out of those 1400 folks.”

Stephanie Johnson is a longtime Madison resident who attended the State of the City.

As the CFO of a Madison business, she said she is excited to see how Space Command will impact their city.

“With 1400 more jobs coming into the area, that just means more business for us,” said Johnson. “So every time there’s a big growth and expansion in this area, anytime a new neighborhood goes up, anytime a new business starts, we are blessed to be involved and have more opportunity.”

Finley has served as mayor for a total of 13 years. He is currently finishing his 3rd term. Mayor-elect Ranae Bartlett will take office in early November.
