The American League East is in store for a dramatic finish to the season with three viable contenders seemingly bound for the playoffs.
The Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox remain separated by just three games with under 18 games to play. Boston has a series remaining with each division rival that should go more than a long way in shaking out the eventual playoff picture.
As mentioned previously when looking at how each team could win the division, here’s how the season series went thus far between the three AL East contenders:
Red Sox-Yankees: 8-2 Red Sox
Yankees-Blue Jays: 8-5 Blue Jays
Blue Jays-Red Sox: 7-3 Blue Jays
Once the standings watch begins each season, FanGraphs playoff odds also are worthy of daily attention. With the final stretch coming up in September, here’s how FanGraphs grades each team’s chances for postseason seeding.
Blue Jays: 99.9% playoffs, 74.7% AL East, 8.9% World Series champions
Yankees: 99.5% playoffs, 18.3% AL East, 12.6% World Series champions
Red Sox: 97.2% playoffs, 7.1% AL East, 4.2% World Series champions
The Blue Jays enjoy the majority percentage for the division given recent momentum and a three-game lead with under three full weeks left to play. The Red Sox could have the better chance to make the jump to the top solely from a head-to-head standpoint given that Boston plays Toronto for one more three-game set in the penultimate series of the regular season.
For now, the Red Sox and Yankees prepare for a massive three-game slate at Fenway Park for the weekend with national televised games Friday night on Apple TV+ and ESPN for “Sunday Night Baseball.”
