The New England Patriots ruled the AFC East for 20 years. Since then, Josh Allen led the transition to five consecutive division titles for the Buffalo Bills.
The Patriots found the quarterback they hope will spark their resurgence in second-year talent Drake Maye. Allen beat Maye in Buffalo last season before each quarterback only played a series in the regular season finale won by New England.
Though they’ll be rivals for years to come in the AFC East, Buffalo’s reigning NFL MVP opened up about a growing connection with the Patriots passer.
“I’ve formed a good relationship with Drake Maye,” Allen told the ‘Like A Farmer’ podcast. “Got to spend some time with him this offseason. He’s an unbelievable guy. He just got married. He’s a bright kid. He can spin the heck out of the ball. He moves well.”
Maye received many comparisons to Allen entering the league based on similar playstyles surrounding big-body physicality, mobility and exceptional arm strength. If the Patriots watch Maye evolve to Allen’s status among NFL quarterbacks, New England will be back in the playoff picture in the coming years.
For now, this is still clearly the division of Allen and the Bills. Maye can learn a lot from Allen’s development from a project with a strong arm to a bonafide game-changer with the ball in his hands.
Maye and Allen meet for the first time this season when the Patriots visit the Bills for NBC‘s “Sunday Night Football” on Oct. 5.
