The San Francisco 49ers are set to face off with the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. But unfortunately for 49ers fans, according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Brock Purdy may not be suiting up at quarterback for the game.
While the 49ers came away with a Week 1 win, perhaps the biggest takeaway from the game was the litany of injuries that continue to pile up for the team.
Star tight end George Kittle was placed on injured reserve following a hamstring injury in Week 1. And now, there is serious concern that Brock Purdy may not be able to play in the Week 2 game as well.
Speaking to the media, Shanahan spoke about the injuries Purdy suffered in Week 1, which include a left shoulder and toe injury, outlining how Purdy is currently a “long shot” to play in Week 2, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says QB Brock Purdy won’t practice today because of his toe and shoulder injuries and views him as a “long shot” to play.Sounds like Mac Jones will be getting his first start with the #49ers.

Purdy’s impact on the success of the 49ers goes without saying. In the four years Purdy has spent in San Francisco, he has put together a 24-13 record and famously helped take the organization to the Super Bowl just two seasons ago.
Given the fact that both Purdy and now Kittle are likely set to miss Sunday’s game, it certainly makes this matchup against the New Orleans Saints a very obvious trap game.
If Purdy is forced to miss the game, former New England Patriots starting quarterback Mac Jones will likely see the start in his absence.

While Jones isn’t a stranger to starting in the NFL, he has certainly struggled in recent years when he has received opportunities to start.
In the last two years with the Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones has combined for just a 4-14 record as a starter.
