EXCLUSIVE: Newcomer Nick Cafero has landed a series regular role in The Varnell Hill Show, the forthcoming spinoff of classic Fox sitcom Martin at BET+.
This will be Cafero’s first series regular role, outside of Crazy for You, an NBC comedy pilot that was cancelled due to the pandemic. He’ll play the role of Jonah Michaelson, the newly self-appointed interim CEO of Mammoth Group. The ultimate nepo baby, Jonah is desperate to prove he belongs.
Tommy Davidson leads the cast, reprising the talk show host role he played as a guest star on Martin, which starred Martin Lawrence as a Detroit DJ. As previously announced, Lawrence and Kym Whitley will also star. The series is billed as a workplace comedy set behind the scenes of the long-running late-night talk show, The Varnell Hill Show. Delving into the chaotic world of television production, it explores Varnell’s journey to remain relevant in an ever-evolving industry and the corporate dynamics of network executives, business stakeholders and creative teams involved in the making of the show.
Martin‘s co-creator, star and exec producer, Lawrence, co-created the new eight-episode series with Martin EP/showrunner Bentley Evans, who wrote the pilot and will direct, while serving as showrunner here. Evans will exec produce via his Bentley Evans Productions alongside Lawrence, Stacy Lyles, Robert Lawrence and Rae Proctor of Runteldat Entertainment, as well as Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Andy Horne. The show will be produced by Evans and his production team.
A Los Angeles-based actor, Cafero can currently be seen recurring on The Runarounds, the teen drama from Amazon MGM Studios and Skydance, which premiered on Prime Video on September 1. Previously, he’s recurred on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and tested on NBC’s Adam and Eva and The Other Black Girl for Hulu.
Additional guest star work includes recurring on Minx (HBO Max), 9-1-1 (Fox), B Positive (CBS), Black-ish (ABC), and The Office (NBC). Also previously appearing in two smaller supporting roles in the films Set It Up (Netflix) and Pitch Perfect (Universal), the actor is repped by Untitled Entertainment and Bloch Law.
