“Detective… Do you seriously think that one of us was capable of killing Sheila?” asks Iñaki Mur, in character as a concerned Salvador Dalí. “We don’t think so, Mr. Dalí… We know,” comes the ominous response from DCI Thistletwaite, played by Stephen Tompkinson.
That scene features in the just-dropped trailer for This is Not a Murder Mystery, the whodunit series that features many of modern history’s greatest surrealist artists under suspicion at a British stately home.
The series, created by Matthias Lebeer and written by Christophe Dirickx and Paul Baeten, stars Pierre Gervais as René Magritte, along with Mur as Dalí, Geert Van Rampelberg as ELT Mesens, Florence Hall as American photographer Lee Miller and Lauren Versnick as a newly deceased Sheila Legge. Donna Banya plays DC Mary Quant, Jonathan Delaney Tynan is Archibald Jukes and Mathilde Warnier is Georgette Magritte, wife of the Belgian artist.
Set in the flamboyant 1930s, This is Not a Murder Mystery sees the group of world-renowned Surrealist artists, who find themselves trapped in a lavish mansion with a mysterious serial killer on the loose. The trailer takes in snappy dialog, dead bodies and art exhibits.
The plot begins with Magritte invited to participate in a private art exhibition at an opulent English estate owned by the flamboyant Lord James, an event that actually happened. After a wild night, Magritte wakes up beside the body of performance artist Legge, and police are then dispatched to discover the killer, as more corpses pile up.
The show, which is an official selection for the Film Fest Gen and is a Prix Europa nominee, comes from Belgium’s Panenka. It was commissioned by Belgium’s VRT, RTL and Proximus as a coproduction with Deadpan Pictures and the New8 European commissioning group, which comprises DR, NPO, NRK, RÚV, SVT, YLE and ZDF, along with VRT.
The title is based on the “This is not a pipe”wording below Magritte’s famous 1929 picture ‘The Treachery of Images,’ as we first told you back in March. News on release dates for the show hasn’t yet come through.
