PHOENIX – A firefighter assigned to the Dragon Bravo Fire in northern Arizona died in the line of duty on Monday, authorities said.

The firefighter, whose name was not released, suffered a cardiac emergency while actively involved in suppression repair efforts, according to the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3.

“Our hearts go out to his family and friends,” authorities said in an announcement. “The wildland fire community is inherently interagency, and a line of duty death impacts us all.”

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are working together to investigate what happened.

The injury occurred while he was working near the North Rim Entrance Station, authorities said.

A paramedic quickly provided medical help, but efforts to revive the firefighter were not successful.

“We deeply appreciate this firefighter’s dedication to his profession and to the communities threatened by wildland fire,” authorities said.

The Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3 said that support is being provided to the first responder’s fellow wildland firefighters assigned to the Dragon Bravo Fire.
