Santa Monica’s Pacific Park revives historic funhouse with creepy twist

A funhouse is set to open this week at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, reviving a piece of the city’s amusement history with a haunting twist.

The seaside park will debut its haunted Funhouse on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. Led by Sprinkles the Clown, the attraction draws inspiration from the historic “Toonerville Funhouse,” which first appeared at Ocean Park Pier in the 1920s and later at Pacific Ocean Park in 1958.

The 2,800-square-foot Funhouse features nine rooms filled with optical illusions, confusing layouts and unsettling surprises designed to both amuse and disorient visitors.

On opening day, Sprinkles will arrive with an entourage of clowns spilling out of an ice cream truck near the Funhouse entrance. An eerie Fortuneteller will also join Sprinkles for the official ribbon-cutting of the attraction.

The original Toonerville Funhouses were inspired by the “Toonerville Trolley” comic strip popular in the early 20th century.

They became icons of Santa Monica’s amusement scene before disappearing in the 1970s. Pacific Park officials said the new Funhouse pays tribute to that legacy while reimagining it for a new generation of thrill seekers.
