PHOENIX — From a pileup crash on Interstate 17 to a Scottsdale murder suspect found in Phoenix, here are some of the top Arizona news stories from Sept. 5-7.


1 dead after multivehicle crash on north Phoenix freeway

A person was killed in a multivehicle collision on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix on Friday morning, authorities said.

The pileup occurred on the northbound side of I-17 near Anthem just before 9 a.m. and backed up traffic for hours, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Four vehicles, including a truck pulling a trailer, were involved in the crash near Daisy Mountain Road.


Suspect in Scottsdale Labor Day murder taken into custody

The suspect police were looking for in connection to a Scottsdale Labor Day murder has been arrested, authorities said.

The Scottsdale Police Department said that Matthew Dieringer, 35, was taken into custody on Saturday.

The department also noted that Dieringer had a history of experiencing homelessness and he would befriend others so they would help find him a place to stay.


HonorHealth to acquire health care group with 18 metro Phoenix clinics

HonorHealth, one of the largest nonprofit health care systems in Arizona, announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement to acquire Evernorth Care Group.

Evernorth Care Group, which operates 18 metro Phoenix primary care clinics, currently serves as the medical practice division of Cigna HealthCare of Arizona.

HonorHealth already has over 200 primary, specialist and urgent care locations along with nine acute care hospitals. It will take over Evernorth Care Group’s clinics, which serve nearly 80,000 patients, after the deal closes.


Mesa’s Hawes Crossing to gain retail hub as mixed-use project takes shape

As residential construction continues inside of Hawes Crossing, an 11.6-acre mixed-use project is taking shape at the center of the 1,100-acre Mesa master planned community.

The yet-to-be-named mixed-use center at Hawes Crossing is being developed by Las Vegas-based commercial real estate firm Fore Property Company, featuring more than 200 multifamily apartment units and 20,000 square feet of retail space.


J. Alexander’s to open Arizona location in East Valley this fall

Steakhouse chain J. Alexander’s will open a new restaurant in Arizona in November.

The restaurant, which is part of Houston-based SPB Hospitality’s portfolio of restaurants, will open in Chandler at 7111 W. Ray Road, in the building formerly occupied by Buca di Beppo.

The first J. Alexander’s opened in 1971 in Nashville and the restaurant chain has grown to more than 70 locations in 15 states.
