Daniel Jones Drops Bold Claim Before Indianapolis Colts Debut

The Indianapolis Colts made a rather jarring move at quarterback this offseason, awarding Daniel Jones the starting job over Anthony Richardson.

A former top pick by the New York Giants, Jones has certainly had a disappointing career to date, although he does have a playoff win under his belt. Perhaps the Colts valued his experience over Richardson’s lack of production.

Whatever the case may be, Jones will be making his debut as Indianapolis’ starting quarterback against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, and before his first regular-season game, he sat down with NFL insider Jordan Schultz to predict what people will be saying about him following the 2025 campaign.

“He led the Colts team to a very strong season and scored a lot of points, made a lot of plays,” Jones told Schultz. “… Looking back, I think you say, hey this is a Colts team that not a ton of people were talking about … but won a ton of games and scored a lot of points.”

Jones was originally selected by the Giants with the sixth overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft and took over as New York’s starter early in his rookie campaign. He put together a rather impressive showing in Year 1, but injuries and regression derailed his next couple of seasons.

But then, in 2022, the Duke product led New York to a shocking playoff appearance and an even more stunning postseason road win over the Minnesota Vikings. He threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions that year while also rushing for 708 yards and seven scores.

Since then, though, Jones’ production has plummeted, and a torn ACL in 2023 obviously didn’t help, either.

The Giants released him late last season, where Jones ultimately joined the Vikings to finish out the year. He then signed with the Colts in free agency.

One thing is for sure: Indianapolis actually has a pretty strong roster surrounding Jones, so maybe the Colts can surprise some people in the AFC South this fall.
