COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Deputy Briggs Wright was out on patrol Tuesday afternoon when he received what he thought was a normal 911 dispatch call.

“It stated that there was MVC, which is a motor vehicle crash. It was located in the 8,000 block of 6th street,” Wright said.

Wright said it was pouring rain, but he was trying to get to the call as fast as he could.

“I noticed a lot of flooding. I guess you could say over by the ditches,” Wright said.

Wright arrived at the scene, and an SUV was submerged in the water, with someone trapped inside.

“I looked to my right, I seen the vehicle, it was about 15 feet off the roadway, I heard screaming, I took off my duty belt, jumped in the water, she was a young woman, and she was screaming and said she couldn’t swim,” Wright said.

Wright said that’s when his adrenaline and training kicked in.

“As the car was sinking, I just opened the door, pulled her out and walked her out the berm to the road and got her to safety,” Wright said.

Wright said that was the very first time he had responded to a car that was submerged.

“You just act, it’s really when it’s a life-saving incident, you just let your training and you let your, I guess your natural instincts take over and everything is heightened, your senses are heightened, so you just do,” Wright said.

The driver of the vehicle is okay and sustained no injuries. The driver told Wright that she was extremely grateful that he rescued her.
