COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A Colbert County deputy helped rescue a driver who was stuck in a flooded field on Tuesday.

According to the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Briggs Wright responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 8000 block of 6th Street in Leighton around 10:46 a.m.

Upon arrival, Deputy Wright found an SUV approximately 15 feet off the roadway in a flooded field.

CCSO said that Deputy Wright immediately heard screams and noticed a female driver trapped in the back seat of her vehicle as water was rising inside.

Deputy Wright quickly removed his duty belt and entered the water. CCSO said that Deputy Wright was able to open the passenger-side rear door and safely assist the driver out of the vehicle, guiding her through the floodwaters and up to the roadway.

The female driver, was placed inside a patrol vehicle, where Deputy Wright provided his rain jacket, turned on the heat, and gave her water while waiting for her parents to arrive.

The Driver expressed her gratitude for Deputy Wright’s swift actions and assistance.

“We are proud of Deputy Wright’s quick response and commitment to the safety of our community. Striving for perfection, and settling for excellence,” said the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office.
