HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Land Trust of North Alabama celebrated the start of construction on the Tollgate Greenway Project today with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Bankhead Trailhead.

The 1.2-mile paved multi-use trail will provide a safe and scenic route for walkers, runners, and cyclists, while also improving access to nature for individuals with limited mobility.

Community members, donors, and local leaders joined LTNA to mark this milestone. Mayor Tommy Battle, Council Member David Little, and other representatives shared remarks on the project’s impact on outdoor recreation and connectivity in Huntsville.

“Today marks an exciting step for Huntsville,” said Mayor Battle. “The Tollgate Greenway will be the first paved trail up Monte Sano designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. Thanks to a half-million-dollar investment from the Land Trust and its donors, and the City’s commitment to bring the vision to life, we are building a project about connection — to nature, to one another, and to Huntsville’s future.”

The trail will begin at LTNA’s Bankhead Trailhead and link with the closed portion of Bankhead Parkway, creating an accessible path along Monte Sano’s western slope.

Marie Bostick, LTNA’s Executive Director, emphasized the long-term effort behind the project.

“This has been years in the making, and it is truly rewarding to see construction begin,” she said. “The Tollgate Greenway was made possible by the generosity of our donors, the leadership of the City of Huntsville, and the support of Monte Sano State Park. Once complete, it will open up new opportunities for our community to enjoy the beauty and benefits of the outdoors.”

The Bankhead Trailhead parking area at Monte Sano Nature Preserve will close to the public in September 2025 and remain closed until the project is finished.

Construction is expected to be complete by Spring 2026.
