Uber riders in Los Angeles can now pay with cash. Here’s how it works

Angelenos using Uber can now pay for trips with cash. This initiative is part of a broader effort to expand payment options and make rides more accessible.

“We believe transportation should open doors for everyone. Yet the truth is that not everyone has access to a bank account or credit card—and some riders simply prefer to pay with cash. That’s why we’re introducing a cash payment option: to make rides more accessible while giving drivers even more ways to earn,” an Uber spokesperson said in an emailed statement to KTLA.

The option is limited to verified riders, and only drivers with strong feedback can accept cash trips. Drivers may opt out at any time.

The cash option is still in the testing phase. Uber first piloted the feature earlier this year in Dallas, Orlando, San Antonio, Cincinnati and Fort Myers, and has since expanded it to other cities.

Here’s how it works:

  • Eligible riders can select “Cash” as their payment method when booking a trip.
  • Drivers see the request marked “Cash,” along with standard details such as estimated earnings, the rider’s name and a verification badge.
  • Drivers may opt out of accepting cash rides.
  • At the end of the trip, riders hand cash directly to the driver.
  • The driver enters the payment amount into the app, and the ride is marked complete.

Uber said that all of its standard safety features, including GPS tracking, RideCheck crash detection, emergency assistance and options for riders and drivers to record audio or video during trips, will remain in place for cash rides.
