The Cleveland Browns have high expectations for Carson Schwesinger after selecting him with the No. 33 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. But on Thursday, Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone made it incredibly clear just how highly regarded Schwesinger is by the Browns coaching staff.

By all accounts, Schwesinger has been a true standout at Browns training camp, even receiving the Maurice Bassett Award, an annual honor given by local media members to the most outstanding rookie at Browns training camp.

Right away, Schwesinger is set to play a significant role on the Browns defense, being named the starting middle linebacker in the team’s unofficial depth chart released just days ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Bubba Ventrone made it incredibly clear just how highly he views Schwesinger, comparing the kind of impact he can have to that of perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Luke Kuechly, according to ESPN Browns reporter Daniel Oyefusi

“We were lucky to get him where we got him,” said Bubba Ventrone of Schwesinger. “Just an instinctive player.”

Anytime you receive a comparison to someone like Luke Kuechly, you are certainly doing something right.

While Kuechly famously had his career cut short at just 28 years of age after suffering multiple concussions throughout his career, he is widely regarded as one of the best linebackers not only of his generation, but arguably in the history of the NFL.

Notably, Kuechly made the Pro Bowl in all but one of his eight seasons in the NFL. And the season that he was not named a Pro Bowler, his rookie year, he was named the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

It may be a bit premature to declare that Schwesinger will have that kind of impact for the Browns, especially out of the gate in his rookie season.

But with that being said, if he can even come close to being the kind of player that Kuechly was, the Browns defense should take a considerable leap in 2025 given the plethora of surrounding talent they have.
