FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Florence Police Department is urging people to lock their car doors after a series of car break-ins within the last two weeks.

“Over the last 2 weeks, we’ve had about 15 reports of car burglaries,” said Joshua Meza with FPD.

Meza said the culprits are unknown and that it’s an easy crime, with how many people don’t lock their car doors.

“A majority of the reports that we have gotten have been from people pulling on door handles in the car being unlocked and then that person going inside and stealing the valuables from inside that vehicle,” Meza said.

Meza says it’s also a security concern, because out of the 15 reports, four guns have been stolen, as well as jewelry, money and credit cards.

“A firearm being in the hands of someone already committing a crime can lead to further crime and a more dangerous crime when they have that firearm, so it’s really important to lock up your firearms, take them inside, put them in a safe, and just don’t leave them outside in a car in an unlocked car,” Meza said.

Meza also told News 19 that the break-ins are specifically happening in one area, but they’ve been all over the city.

“It’s important to report any firearms that are stolen out of any vehicles because if a crime does happen with that firearm want to be able to trace that back to the person that used it rather than the one that owned it and hold them accountable for that crime,” Meza said.

If you happen to fall victim, give the Florence Police Department a call.
