Planning documents raise questions about fate of WaterWorld show at Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood’s longtime WaterWorld stunt show could be in jeopardy, according to newly filed planning documents — though the park has not announced any closure.

Documents submitted to Los Angeles County indicate that the theater currently housing WaterWorld could be transformed into a “new theme park attraction with food and beverage retail.”

The WaterWorld area is labeled as T-3 in the updated conceptual map.

KTLA reached out to Universal Studios Hollywood for comment, but did not receive a response by publication time.

The possibility of losing WaterWorld has sparked strong reactions among theme park fans. The stunt spectacular, which opened in 1995, remains a popular destination for visitors. Theme park blogs and creators, such as Theme Park Wizard, have also weighed in on the future of WaterWorld.

The site plan is part of NBCUniversal’s Evolution Plan, a multi-decade expansion effort that covers new studio facilities, attractions and hotels across the Universal City lot.

The most recent filing, tied to a technical services building planned near the E.T. parking garage, outlines several other projects. One 500-room hotel is slated for a location next to the Frankenstein parking structure, while another has been proposed across from the park entrance on land formerly occupied by Saddle Ranch Chop House.

Other elements in the filing include a new CityWalk entertainment venue, expanded tram and parking facilities, and multiple additions to the backlot.

Universal has also suggested new Studio Tour experiences will follow the recent closure of Fast & Furious: Supercharged.
