Yankees Now Have ‘No Reason’ to Promote Spencer Jones After Brutal Change

The New York Yankees made some savvy roster additions to fix the team this year and it could be a long time until fans see any more.

The team traded for Ryan McMahon to replace DJ LeMahieu and brought in Jose Caballero as some reinforcement for Anthony Volpe. And now, even with their outfield left short-handed by an injury to Aaron Judge, it seems the team will be holding off on bringing up Spencer Jones, its most big-league ready prospect.

“Jones celebrated his promotion to Triple-A in late June by putting forth one of the most impressive individual months of the season,” RJ Anderson wrote for CBS Sports. “You could understand how people felt Jones was on the rise, and why they wondered if he might get the call after Aaron Judge hurt his elbow and required an injured list stint. The Yankees did not press the button then, and they have no reason to press the button now.”

The Yankees held off on bringing Jones up while he was hitting .419/.477/.946 in Triple-A in July and so there’s virtually no chance they’ll change course after he slashed just .180/.250/.306 in August. And even with Judge sidelined from a defensive position with his elbow problem, the Yankees seem set with Jasson Dominguez, Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger in the outfield with Austin Slater set to return soon.

As a result, despite the progress Jones demonstrated earlier in the summer, Yankees fans will have to wait until at least next year to see him in the big leagues.

“Jones has been one of the most polarizing prospects in the minors the last few years on account of his extreme combination of strength and swing-and-miss tendencies,” Anderson added. “Based on his last couple of months, expect him to continue to occupy that space — and to remain at Triple-A until 2026.”

After a slew of trade deadline transactions to shore up the roster why they could, the Yankees seem most likely to reach the playoffs with the team it has now.
