MLB Insider: Mets ‘Make Most Sense’ For $54 Million Free Agent Slugger

The New York Mets have been one of the more aggressive teams in baseball for a few years now, and they’re finally reaping the benefits of this aggression.

Last year, the Mets’ offseason was headlined by the blockbuster addition of superstar outfielder Juan Soto. New York had to give up nearly $800 million to land him, but it’s proving to be well worth it with each passing game.

But the Pete Alonso sweepstakes was largely overshadowed last offseason. In fact, it seemed like the Mets were complacent with losing Alonso in their pursuit of Soto. Ultimately, Alonso would re-sign with the Mets on a two-year deal that includes an opt-out after year one.

Alonso has been a star at the dish this season, so the expectation is that he’ll opt out of his current deal, sending him back into free agency again.

With that in mind, MLB insider Jon Heyman recently said the Mets “made the most sense” as a landing spot for Alonso.

At this point, it’s hard to imagine the superstar in a different uniform. He’s been incredible with the Mets, and his power is almost impossible to replace. The fans have grown to love the Polar Bear over the years, and it would be a crushing blow to lose him in free agency.

There are a few other big market clubs that could pursue Alonso in the coming months, but it’s hard to imagine them outbidding the Mets. New York likely isn’t pursuing a different free agent worth over $500 million like it was with Soto last offseason. That should give the front office the freedom to give Alonso the contract he wants.
