The Jacksonville Jaguars moved up to No. 2 overall to select Colorado Buffaloes dual-threat player, Travis Hunter. Hunter won the Heisman Trophy for his ability to play both the wide receiver and cornerback positions with great skill.

Though there have been multiple conversations about whether Hunter will be able to play both positions, he will assume both offensive and defensive roles for the 2025 NFL season.

Interestingly, the Jaguars have made it clear which position Hunter is expected to play more in Week 1, as he has been named the starter for only one position.

According to the Jaguars’ depth chart for Week 1, Hunter has been named a starting wide receiver but a backup cornerback.

There is still a big expectation that Hunter will play both roles in games; it appears that the Jaguars are expecting the dual-threat rookie to take on a more offensive role when the team faces the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

It is not at all shocking that the Jaguars want Hunter to take the lead in an offensive capacity. His collegiate numbers showcase a far more dominant nature as a wide receiver.

In 2024 with the Buffaloes, Hunter secured 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as a wide receiver. On the defensive side of things, he brought in four interceptions and 36 total tackles.

Hunter is still a ball hawk in terms of defending, but he may need a bit more time to ramp up to playing both positions fully in a game.

Hunter sits behind Jourdan Lewis on the depth chart, meaning he is likely to take on a more rotational type of role as a cornerback. The good news is Liam Coen can choose to use Hunter in whatever capacity benefits the team more.

Hunter is a unique and rare player who is likely to be utilized in many facets of the game. In terms of Week 1, he will assume the role of a wide receiver.
