Seth Rogen was seen snapping pictures with a portable camera as Benny Safdie began the rollout for his solo directorial debut, The Smashin Machine, yesterday in Venice.

The veteran comedian has now confirmed in a short interview that his unannounced appearance was part of his summer research for the second season of his hit industry comedy The Studio.

Rogen told Italian website Adnkronos that he was at the festival “scouting locations” for The Studio season two. Rogen didn’t confirm whether he will be present during any further festivities in Venice or whether he will pop up at any other fall festivals like TIFF. His reps didn’t immediately respond to Deadline’s request for comment.

The Studio season two was confirmed by Apple in May. At the time, Rogen and his co-creator joked that Evan Goldberg they were looking forward to “taking the lived experience of making season one and immediately putting it into season two, then repeating that loop for ten more seasons”.

The Studio, which launched on March 26, centers around Matt Remick, played by Rogen, the newly installed boss of Continental Studios, who must deal with their own insecurities and the way that Hollywood works in order to make big tentpole movies and prestige dramas, while keeping their Bob Evans-style boss Griffin Mill, played by Bryan Cranston, and the filmmaking community happy.

The series also stars Catherine O’Hara as Patty Leigh, a former boss at Continental who becomes a producer, Ike Barinholtz, who plays Sal Saperstein, a Continental exec and friend of Remick who becomes a big star at the Golden Globes, Chase Sui Wonders, who plays junior executive Queen Hackett, and Kathryn Hahn, who plays marketing boss Maya Mason.

As well as Cranston, guest stars include David Krumholtz, Dewayne Perkins, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, and Rebecca Hall. There are also star turns from the likes of Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Sarah Polley, Greta Lee, Anthony Mackie, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Olivia Wilde, Zac Efron, and Ice Cube, who all appear as themselves.

The show nabbed a whopping 23 Emmy nominations last month.

Venice runs until Sept 6.
