An investigation is underway after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man who she’d met on a dating app, and who may have “catfished” her.
The assault happened around 3:20 a.m. Sunday morning at a hotel in West Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to a local medical center to take the report from the victim, officials said.
According to LASD officials, the woman met a man in the West Hollywood area after they connected through a dating app.
When the man arrived, she was surprised to see that his physical appearance was different from his dating profile, and he did not appear to be the same person with whom she believed she was communicating—an online predatory behavior colloquially referred to as “catfishing.”
Officials said the victim did not want to make a scene or be impolite, so she agreed to continue their meetup.
Eventually, LASD officials said, the man sexually assaulted her at a local hotel.
What happened next is unclear, but the victim was evaluated at a West Hollywood medical center, and her attacker has not been located.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, a suspect description is not available, and due to the Labor Day holiday, detectives were not on duty Monday.
Anyone with information was urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department WeHo Station at 310-855-8850. Anonymous tips can be provided online or by calling 800-222-8477.
This latest sexual assault comes following several high-profile attacks in recent weeks in the affluent city and surrounding neighborhoods, including one that took place mid-August on the the 1200 block of North Sweetzer Avenue. Witnesses captured images of that suspect.
A man suspected in three sexual assaults in West Los Angeles was recently freed on bond, and detectives were searching for additional victims who’ve yet to come forward.
